Ceux-ci sont déclamés en public lors d'une manifestation spécialement masculine à la mémoire du défunt. Dans cette cérémonie au cours de laquelle le Coran est lu (souvent en entier), plusieurs discours peuvent être prononcés afin de rappeler aux vivants le caractère inéluctable de la mort et l'importance de bien s'y préparer.
L'orateur insiste sur la belle oeuvre laissée par le défunt. C'est là que les thrènes peuvent être récités. Même si le poète s'adresse directement au mort, le message qu'il délivre demeure une leçon de vie pour l'assistance...
